“Soak me in your laundry and I’ll come out clean, scrub me and I’ll have a snow-white life. Tune me in to foot-tapping songs, set these once-broken bones to dancing. Don’t look too close for blemishes, give me a clean bill of health. God, make a fresh start in me, shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life. Don’t throw me out with the trash, or fail to breathe holiness in me. Bring me back from gray exile, put a fresh wind in my sails! Give me a job teaching rebels your ways so the lost can find their way home. Commute my death sentence, God, my salvation God, and I’ll sing anthems to your life-giving ways. Unbutton my lips, dear God; I’ll let loose with your praise.”
Psalm 51:7-15 MSG
As I have been studing this same passage of scripture this week, I found that it was written by David after he committed adultery with Bathsheba and then had her husband Uriah murdered. Imagine David’s frame of mind as he wrote. Today’s featured part of the scripture is David’s plea for mercy.
Now I encourage you to think about any sins you have committed, large and small, and how remorseful you felt afterwards. Did you feel a sense of urgency to ask for God’s mercy?
This Thankful Thursday take some time to read all of Psalm 51. Reflect on mistakes, problems, or sins you have caused or committed over your lifetime. Imagine how it would be if you had no hope of mercy and forgiveness. Instead of hopelessness, you have been given salvation at Jesus’ expense. You have been redeemed and promised everlasting life, despite your transgressions. Now unbutton your lips and let loose with praise and thanksgiving to God. Click here and listen to “Redeemed” by Big Daddy Weave as you begin your Thankful Thursday with praise.
