Have you ever pictured Christ building us up in him? Recently while running, I noticed this tree being held up by a piling. I immediately pictured us as the tree, rooted in him and the piling as Christ, strengthening us in our faith. We read in Co 2:6-7 NIV; “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

Wow, overflowing with thankfulness. I imagine being “built up in him” has a lot to do with being thankful because if we are built up, goodness and thankfulness must flow out. There are many days we allow Satan to rob us of our blessings. It is easy to get stuck in our thoughts, the news, or even our past. In those times, we can speak the name of Jesus and speak life into our situation.
When I read the message version of this scripture it stepped on my toes.
“My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you’ve been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him. You’re deeply rooted in him. You’re well constructed upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you’ve been taught. School’s out; quit studying the subject and start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving.”
What is something you are thankful for today? I am thankful for the peace I feel in His presence. I am thankful for the power I feel in His name. In this day of riots and heartbreak, I encourage you to listen to this song “I Speak Jesus” by Here Be Lions. Some of the lyrics sing; “Your name is power, your name is healing, your name is LIFE, break every stronghold, shine through the shadows, burn like a fire”.
Will you start living a life in Him so that you are overflowing with thankfulness? As the message version would say, quit studying it and start living it.
