#overcome #waterwalkinggirls

The last few days have been particularly difficult for me emotionally. The news that schools will remain closed for the remainder of the year was hard to hear. I had expected that would be the decision. I understand the decision. I even agree with the decision. However hearing the Governor make the announcement made it real. As I process the ramifications of all that is taking place I feel as if I am in mourning. I am grieving the loss of time with my kindergarten students, the loss of baseball season, the loss of dance class, the loss of Preston’s first year of high school and Briley’s first year of middle school. I miss going to church and my church family. I miss routine and schedule. What about you? What are you grieving?

We are all hurting and mourning the loss of something. In my Sunday school class I often talk about how sometimes when I am stopped at an intersection I take a moment to think about all the people stopped there with me. Everyone is stopped in the same place at the same time but each person has his/her own schedule and problems. Some are dealing with family problems, some with financial issues, and some with a health/medical crisis. But in that one moment in time we are all stopped together. So let’s think of Covid 19 as a large red light. We are all stopped together at this intersection. We are all struggling to accept the changes and find our own way through. We all have this loss in common with the entire nation. So what will we do? How will we move on? How can we compensate for all the loss? Psalm 121:1-2 offers these words of comfort and advice:

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains-where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

We have to stay focused on Our Savior. We have to trust that just as He has already “overcome the world” He will also overcome Covid 19. Let’s find ways to fix our eyes on Him. Here are some ideas to help us stay focused throughout our day:

*Daily prayer/devotion time: Set a specific time each day for communion with God.

*Journal: write down scripture or quotes that “speak” to you; write down prayer request; write down your feelings

*Memorize scripture: choose a scripture that gives you strength and comfort and memorize it

*Create visual reminders: write scripture or words of encouragement on notecards and post them around your house; place a cross or Spiritual symbol in places that you will see

*Gratitude: each day write down 3-5 simple things you are grateful for from the last 24 hours

*Joy: seek some joy every day; find simple things that make you happy and do them

Whatever ways you choose to cope during this time, stay focused on Him. Use this time at the Covid 19 stoplight to examine yourself. Refocus on Him and make Him your #1 priority.

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians: 4:16-18.
