“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 NIV

This week I have shared with you a different word each day in hopes that you would be inspired to choose a word of the year for 2020. Choosing a word of the year is a way to be mindful and intentional about a certain attribute or area of your life. My word of the year for 2020 is impact.
Impact: Have a strong effect on someone or something
Years ago I learned of a book called The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews. The book changed my life and made me much more aware of my effect on others. If you google you will find that Wikipedia defines the butterfly effect as “an idea that says a small change can make much bigger changes happen. The term butterfly effect comes from an analogy where a butterfly flaps its wings in Chicago and a tornado occurs in Tokyo.” That is impact! The idea is that tiny changes can cause huge effects.
My word for 2019 was intention. Having intention as my word of the year has made me more conscious of moment by moment choices and has made me be intentional about the choices I make. In 2020 I will use intention to make an impact. My plan is to work from the inside out, like a ripple effect, to make an impact. I plan to first start with making tiny changes within myself. Then I will focus on making an impact in my home/family, church, and finally within my community. Perhaps God will push me to make an impact even further outside of my community. One of my dreams is to write a book and 2020 will be the year I start that process so who knows what impact the words I share may have outside of Georgetown, South Carolina.
2020 begins a new decade and with that new decade I pray that my life may be used for His glory to make an impact on others. My biggest dream is that my impact will be a fulfillment of the Great Commission. In Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus gives us this command: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
What about you? What will be your word for 2020? Has God spoken to you about an area of your life that He wants you to focus on for 2020? Please share with us what your word is and we can help hold each other accountable. Next week at some point Julie will share with us her word for 2020. We plan to re-visit our word of the year periodically to access our progress and to be sure we stay focused. Julie and I are so honored to share this journey of words with you all. Thank you for your love, support and encouragement and most of all thank you for taking the time to read our posts. May 2020 be filled with much love, happiness, and growth and may each of us flap our wings and make an impact for His glory!
