Last week Julie shared her experience of misplacing her grandmother’s ring and how she searched for it in various places. After reading about her experience I have noticed how often I am searching for something and I imagine you are often searching for something too. Sometimes we are searching for our car keys, our favorite piece of clothing, important documents, etc. All of these are items that we once had but have misplaced. However, sometimes we are searching or seeking something we desire such as job direction, relationship guidance, parenting advice, answers, etc. In fact what do we do when we need information instantly? We search Google or we ask Siri. No matter our walk in life and no matter what season of life we are in, we often find ourselves seeking or searching. The definition of seek is to attempt to find (something), attempt or desire to obtain or achieve (something), ask for (something) from someone.

The Bible has many scriptures about seeking and searching. Take some time to do a Google “search” and read some of them. One of the most familiar is Matthew 6:33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” And there is our ultimate answer. No matter what we are seeking or what we are searching for, if we seek Him first, all other things will fall into place. We must turn to God and allow Him to guide and direct us. Too often we try to rely on ourselves and the world around us for answers (Google and Siri) when the real answers we need should come from Him.
When I was a child my mama cross-stitched and framed my name with the words “Seeking One” underneath and Matthew 6:33. It always hung in my bedroom. Recently I have realized how prophetic mama’s handiwork was for me as I have reflected I realize just how often I am seeking or searching. (On a side note… I am currently searching for that framed picture! I can’t remember where I am storing it in my house. LOL!)
And what about you? Are you searching for something? Are you seeking something? Do you have questions that only God can answer? Take time today to sit quietly and listen. Allow Him the opportunity to help you in your search. And have your ears and eyes open as you go throughout your day. God may use various strategies to speak to you: another person, a song, a scripture, or even nature. Listen and look carefully. And remember His answer may not be our answer.
Matthew 6:34 sums up what our attitude should be when we seek Him first and allow Him to guide and direct our searching. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Dear Heavenly Father, Forgive me when I do not seek you first. Today guide and direct my steps. Open my eyes and ears to the promptings of the Holy Spirit as you give me the answers to the questions I am searching for in my life. May my heart and mind accept your answers and may I not worry but trust You. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen
