The definition of sorrow is a feeling of deep distress caused by loss, disappointment, or other misfortune suffered by oneself or others. We suffer different degrees of sorrow nearly every day. But sometimes the sorrow we suffer is so overwhelming that we don’t know how to process or deal with it.

The past week proved to be filled with much sadness and grief for our community. It seemed that each day brought tragedy and sorrow. As a mom, I found it difficult to help my children work through the sadness. How do we work through the grief and continue to move forward?
As a Christian I turned to the Bible for guidance and direction. Psalm 30:5 tells us “…weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” But as I read the scripture before and after this verse, I found His answer to combat sorrow.
“I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me. Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. You, Lord brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit. Sing the praise of the Lord, you his faithful people; praise his holy name.” Psalm 30:1-4
“To you, Lord, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy; ‘What is gained if I am silenced, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim you faithfulness? Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me; Lord, be my help.’ You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever.” Psalm 30:8-12
So how do we work through our pain and sorrow? PRAISE! Praise God for those we have lost. Praise Him for the love we have experience because of them. Praise God for the examples they set for us. Praise Him for the memories we will always have. And Praise God for the rejoicing that comes in the morning. Sometimes the morning seems far away. But keep singing praises and hold on to the promise in Lamentations 3:22-23, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
I truly believe that non-believers are always watching Christians to see how we handle circumstances. Others are watching how we act and react to difficulties. The way we deal with our sorrow is under a microscope. Let’s honor the loved ones we are grieving for and the Lord we love by praising through our pain. Ponder ways you can praise. Will you accept the challenge? What ways can you show your praise? As we all weep through the night, may we move toward the morning with rejoicing.

Father,
You promise you carry us through deep waters (Isa 43:2) May you kiss all of us with your peace that transcends all understanding, guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus (Phil 4:7). Cover us with your feathers for under your wings we will find refuge. Your faithfulness will be our shield and our protection (Ps 91:4). And may we find comfort in knowing you will one day wipe away every tear from our eyes. There shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor pain, for the former things have passed away, for you will make all things new (Rev 21: 4-5). You are the God of all comfort; may we have the strength to comfort each other as you have comforted us (2Cor 1:4).
